Today's Word

"Be it done to me according to your word."

Luke 1:38

Today's Reflection

The angel Gabriel comes to Mary with news that will change her life entirely.

She does not know what it will cost.

She does not know about the flight into Egypt,

the loss of her son in the Temple,

the years of following him through Galilee,

the three hours at the foot of the cross.

She knows none of this.

She says yes anyway.

"Be it done to me according to your word."

The Carmelite tradition, which honours Mary above all other saints,

has spent eight centuries meditating on that single sentence.

On what it means to hold yourself so loosely that you can be used entirely.

On the kind of prayer that is not talking at God, but listening for him.

On surrender not as defeat, but as the deepest kind of trust.

Mary did not know the plan.

She trusted the one who had one.

Today's Prayer

Lord, we bring you today the things we do not understand.

The situations with no clear answer.

The futures we cannot see.

Like Mary, we want to say: be it done to me according to your word.

Help us to mean it.

Amen.

Today's Call

Name one situation in your life where you are struggling to trust God.

Bring it to him today and say, as honestly as you can:

"I do not understand this. But I trust you."
